The theme revolves around the characteristics of three major Mafia factions: the Reactive Elements, the Toxic Elements, and the Radioactive Elements. Each team has their own style of play:
    • Reactives: Meant to be a pestlike, "annoying" team that shuts down opposition through roleblocking and mass killing. Notable abilities on this team are Chlorine's distract, Francium's revealing daykill, and the entire team's extra kill in Ionize.
    • Toxics: Meant to be the "slow and steady" team that focuses on maintaining a strong core through the endgame. Notable abilities on this team are Lead's protects, Antimony's safeguards, and Mercury's vote of 2 that becomes very powerful in the lategame.
    • Radioactives: Meant to be a complimentary duo that thrives on communication to win. While Uranium kills, Radium can share inspection results while also discussing whether or not to use Safeguard - though safeguarding protects Uranium from poison, it also largely hints the identity of Uranium to the poisoner.

At least, when the theme was first being conceptualized the Mafia were the focal points. Plutonium was added as a lone wolf (actually it was a play on the role Pegasus from Duelist Kingdom :o), and it seems in the modern-day there is a lot of hype on Pluto. Meanwhile, Village is pretty normal in its abilities - the only real difference is the Copper role, which can use each command once per game - so either biding one's time or making full use of all commands quickly are viable strategies.

Originally I had considered making a separate Mafia faction called the Rare Earths that involved use of the convert command, but after playtesting on PokeWorldBW's Server, the idea ended up stunted. However, further comments and suggestions are welcome. Thanks. ^ _ ^

Some of the helps are rather wordy - though I really like that the helps specify what each role does.

In the end, this is one of the best themes. Approved

People's thoughts on Hydrogen getting hax? I personally don't like when a mass number of townies get hax, but the village isn't particularly powerful.

EDIT: User Water has pointed out to me that I am a dumbass and it's only 2% on inspect, which is fine.

This theme is one of the few I would describe as a masterpiece. It's balanced to the point any side can win through skill, not relying on any outside factors (except possibly Nept).

Great theme, and keep up the good work. Approved.

Not "should", but poison takes effect after all night actions are executed, which means poison and curse occur outside of priority charts.

I mentioned this in #Project Mafia, and it was either Rice or TUO who explained it would be too much work to change it for very little gain (aka, not gonna happen). If people can't resist deadtalking, they can always be banned.

What's the point of Plutonium ignoring distracts when it doesn't have night actions? You should probably delete that line of code, unless there is a purpose.

    Update:

Fixed some minor issues with broadcasts.
    Changed recharge to charges
Fixed the help messages to all have the "±" symbol (some didn't).
Fixed the 2 errors the theme had in Rice's themechecker (1 Fatal, 1 Minor)

If anyone sees any MINOR errors that don't affect the structure of the theme (Something like "Nitrogen's help has a typo in it" is what i'm looking for. Not something like: "X player games are imbalanced") feel free to PM me as I am currently hosting the theme on my github.

What if you didn't know what role you were?

But really, it will have to be that way, since you hax inspect, and other roles do too. There's no way to avoid haxing yourself while still letting everything else function correctly.

You could have a different command on your own inspect, but then that command would have to be on others who hax inspect. Not a tough switch.

Hydrogen hax is a giant pain for any mafia side, but the Uranium team gets screwed over the most. Hax on inspect? What? I seriously thing hydro should not be haxing inspect.

Honestly, there's a 2% chance of Uranium being haxed - almost nil, in other words. I don't see a need to change it. That's the draw of the Hydro role, you have the very slight potential of getting hax. Taking out the chance of revealing the Player tends to derail that.

Okay. Maybe hydro connect to Oxygen or something. (And only oxygen) I'll see what changes I can make and if I can switch around the roles/spawn or buff up how it is currently.

I think Rare Earths should still be added. Either that, or push Neptunium into smaller games. It doesn't need 28 players to be balanced, and since Neptunium is extremely radioactive, I think Uranium should ignore Neptunium's bond (but still kill all other distractions).

If I recall correctly, Cerium could convert into one of three roles; Lanthanum, Yttrium or Dysprosium. One had a kill that went through protect and killed evaders (was actually a poison, like Crossbow from Weapons.) One had an expose that didn't reveal who they decided to expose, and one had something else, I forgot quite frankly. If Dysprosium could be added as that evader killer + kefka, he could not only threaten the village but throw Uranium and Plutonium off as well.

    Hope everyone is doing well!

So I've been doing lab research on gold nanoparticle biosensors recently, and my work reminded me a lot of Elements (sorry to admit, haha). Anyways, I think with two or so years of history under its belt being basically the same theme throughout, Elements might need a revamp to catch up with new coding possibilities. From browsing through the recent Theme Coding Updates thread, I attempted to quickly add teamtalk since it truly amazing, but I'm talking about (possibly) major mechanistic changes to this theme. I have an idea that I would appreciate opinions on - and of course, other suggestions are more than welcome.

My idea for Elements is to have some roles be able to "fuse" with other roles, as we all know atoms do in real life. (Hi Angel Flonne!) For this theme, fusion would be a convert in which all participants must target the other participants of the fusion. All participants of the fusion turn into the same (common) role. So for example, the Water role would now be possible: Oxygen A, Hydrogen B, and Hydrogen C would all target each other with /fuse, and at the end of the round A, B, and C would all be H2O! H2O would have its own role with (buffed) abilities, but with a drawback: if any member of the fusion dies, the other members also die. This would create a layer of strategy: is it safe to fuse, and are the benefits worth it?

Ideally I would have wanted A, B, and C to share the same action for the entire "fusion team" AND have to vote uniformly (e.g. the H2O role must vote together). However, from what I gather right now, this is currently impossible for Server Mafia. Therefore, the current idea is to have each of the new fusion roles be buffed alternatives of the original constituents, while still retaining the "if one dies, they all die" concept. As another example, Salt is now finally possible with the fusion of Na and Cl. Upon fusion Na and Cl become Salt (Na) and Salt (Cl), respectively, and each has their original abilities PLUS evasion to nightkills/poison because of their strong crystal lattice structure (once again, an example that can be changed). This also illustrates the flexibility of fusions to be extended not only to village roles, but also Mafia roles as well.

That's the main idea I've been thinking about for the theme, and I have some roles in mind that would be possible fusions. Convert was made who knows how long ago, and yet it has never been incorporated in Elements, so maybe this would be a novel concept to try out! I would love to hear opinions!

    ---

In other news, I was glancing around on the Mafia Statistics page, and the win ratio seems extremely lopsided in favor of the Healthy Elements (Village). This honestly surprised me because when the theme was first "let go" (so to speak), Toxic Elements had the highest win ratio from my personal collected data (and now they are tied with the "Tie" ending LOL). Perhaps this is due to the more hectic/chaotic atmosphere in general, causing multiple small Mafia teams crossfiring more often and/or the Village having the advantage through sheer numbers. The lopsided ratio slightly worries me because a lot of the fusions (see above) I was thinking about would benefit the Village.

In response, I think some balancing changes might be needed. Given the Toxic Elements' current terrible ratio, they need the biggest buff IMO. I am assuming that in this day and age of Server Mafia, Poison alone is simply not going to cut it for the Toxics. Originally their protection helped them last deep into the game where their heightened votes mattered more, but it seems now that a lot of the action happens immediately and they just swamped (and their method of killing requires patience, which ... may not fit the current atmosphere). I'm thinking of two things: making their poison silent, and doing revenge-poison-if-killed. Silent poison may sound weird or negligible, but I think it gives Toxics a subtle advantage in knowledge: it prevents the poisoned target from suddenly becoming active and asking for Village role PMs, for instance. Plus I don't really like the feeling of "You have 1 day to live." - recently I've felt I'd rather die immediately anyways. Meanwhile, the revenge-poison I feel fits the flavor and would greatly strengthen the team: no longer are Toxics easy targets for crossfire or a Phosphorus kill - Nitrogen or the lynch would now be the best method to kill them off. I was going to say more on this topic but I forgot.

Minor also, but Reactives' ionize should be buffed. Probably should be unable to be distracted and/or piercing through protect/nightkill evasion. Thoughts?

Also [aside] that reminds me of another thing: I was looking up the Gold-Sulfur bond (very important for molecular diagnostics), and how the two elements have such strong affinity. Which is a shame because they would be perfect fusion partners BUT I replaced Sulfur for Phosphorus such a long time ago that switching back wouldn't be worth it IMO.

Yeah so I would appreciate all thoughts and comments! Thanks!

Before I forget, I would also like to reply to Matt Ayala's thoughtful post. Yes, it is true that originally the Rare Earths were an idea for another Mafia side! This is way back when convert first came out, and since everyone was trying Convert on their themes, I had the (now commonplace I think?) idea of a Mafia side that can buff themselves however they choose by converting themselves to roles with different powers.

Anyways, recently I've become a lot more susceptible/confused with themes that have a lot more chaos and/or conglomeration of roles. I attribute this to a long hiatus from Mafia (that I will probably soon go back to since I really should focus on my research) - obviously it is overwhelming coming back to learn literally hundreds of new roles. Therefore, I would prefer not to add new roles if at all possible. Most changes that I would love would be mechanics changes to roles that currently exist - I think the fusion idea from the earlier post would increase game strategy without cluttering up the roles list with relatively random roles.

In fact, I'd probably try to clean up some of the current Element roles. Iron can probably go - with Xenon taking over maybe with a buff if needed at high games. Furthermore, Francium and Antimony do not really add anything to the theme in retrospect, and if really needed their abilities could be transferred to a current Mafia role or a Mafia fusion of some sort. There are some other things that should be considered, as well. Like Radium taking over Uranium's kill when Uranium dies totally makes sense. More controversial is Plutonium being on the Radioactives? Maybe, but I'd love to hear what others have to say! Thanks again for the comments, Matt Ayala.

mmm I was thinking about how it might be cool if there was an Elements update but at the same time the theme is still pretty consistent even in terms of balance that I don't think it needs to be that reworked

I have heard some people say how they wish they could fuse with Oxygen when they see they're Hydro - I do feel that a three-atom molecule might be too much for mafia because a) you'd require all three of them and b) if you do get the bond it'd be pretty powerful even if they all die when one dies. Sticking with diatomic molecules would be simpler (unfortunately some stuff like carbon monoxide or hydrogen peroxide wouldn't be pretty village). Or you could make it so that the Oxygen converts into H2O while the Hydrogens remain the same.

I was thinking that Sodium and Chlorine would convert each other on death to become salt.

Silent poison would be very interesting, the only thing being it'd be weird to see people randomly die when you didn't expect poison deaths, although I think it's something worth trying out. Revenge-poison I feel wouldn't actually buff the toxics as they would only take people down with them, not survive longer, although I guess there is a small amount of deterrence factoring in that. Maybe making them avoid hax could help.

Ionize avoiding distracts would work, as would Radium getting Uranium's kill.

Pluto imo would be fine on his own, as he has that lone wolf reputation pretty set.

Agreeing with most things that Windblown has said, and have a tidbit of info I can provide myself

About the H2O thing, maybe one Hydrogen and one Oxygen, once they know eachother, can /fuse and become carbon monoxide and go rogue, a feature that I'm pretty sure is not in Elements atm. Also, something that might be funny if you choose to make carbon monoxide a desirable convert option in more than 50% of cases is to keep Iron as a Miller and when Oxygen tries to fuse with Iron, they both become rust, a stump role (or something else possibly?). idk all this is up to you. you can use my suggestions or not it really doesn't matter

Though Pluto could in theory work with the Radioactives, the mafia community will probably flip out, so I'm kinda in agreement with Windblown on this too

    Thanks for the replies!

I agree that three-member fusions would be rare if each member had to target the other two members (the method that I think is the most fair). So if fusions would be an 'extra' rather than a main strategic component, then it probably wouldn't be worth the effort to include it. Like you said, diatomic elements would be simpler. The other solution, having Oxygen convert to water without any Hydrogens being changed, could work, but it feels like a missed chance to utilize the elements - since the theme has all the components already! Going rogue with Cyanide, Carbon Monoxide, or Laughing Gas would be interesting - I don't know how balanced that would be given there are so many evil groups right now though.

My overall feeling right now is that to make fusion work would require a theme /entirely/ devoted to the concept - having it as an offhand option that would rarely be used would be a letdown. As of now, I think Elements would require a massive overhaul to be based on fusions, which I can't bring myself to do at this point - thus I'd rather hold off on the idea, though if anyone would like to incorporate fusion in any new themes, that would be a cool endeavor!

Changes that I might do if I have time would be following through on buffing ionize, converting Radium on Uranium death, and maybe the silent poison/poisonattacker. Sounds like Pluto is set in its ways. ;)

Idea: how about inorganic cyanide (NaCN). Possible ways this can go down:

On death of Sodium, Carbon and Nitrogen become Cyanide.
On death of Carbon, Sodium and Nitrogen become Cyanide.
On death of Nitrogen, Carbon and Sodium become Cyanide.

    or

On death of Carbon and Nitrogen, Sodium becomes Cyanide.
On death of Carbon and Sodium, Nitrogen becomes Cyanide.
On death of Nitrogen and Sodium, Carbon becomes Cyanide.

The latter three could work really, but you're not interested in using the concept so :x

here's a laundry list for ya. just comments/suggestions/thoughts, idk, do what you want/ignore as you please

    1) I think the Toxic Elements' poison should go before all the kills
    2) It would definitely help for ionize to bypass kill evasion since the Reactives don't really stand much of a chance against Uranium/Plutonium 1v1
    3) Iron's protect and safeguard could be combined into one command (if you keep it)
    4) Safeguard should probably go after distracts unless you want to block the distracts... but then the safeguarders themselves can't be distracted
    5) Team actions should be combined to spam /priority less (the way Kirby and SSBB and whatnot do it)

I wonder if that is scripts or anything? I didn't change anything recently for poison specifically, but I can check again. Thanks, Kakuna and Veteran Padgett. :)

Matt Ayala, cool idea, though for the purposes of Mafia those four elements would be weird together!

PokeWorldBW, good list. Fuzzy recently told me that silent poison is unavailable - I guess I had looked in the Mafia thread and Xeroanx had asked about silent poison, which is why I thought that was coded (apparently nobody ever responded to that question). So yeah, Toxics deserve to have their poison as highest priority kill (though of course the death still occurs last). Reactives got buffed in Ionize, which goes through Uranium/Plutonium's nightkill evasion but can still be PLed --> thus Chlorine still needs to make an effort to PL Oxygen or whatever other distracter, if they want to have an assured ionize off. The other three in your list I might get to in the future - but since they apply to large games I'll do it later!

I haven't really looked at all the changes completely, but from what I've seen it looks really good. Maybe you can add a Titanium role? It'd most likely be a bomb, but given the success of the song "Titanium" I feel like it might be fitting. It's lighter than Iron iirc but is just as durable.

Why would that make it any more fitting?

Because given the song, it now has some cultural popularity as an element, I suppose. idk how to explain it, the song made the element popular in effect.

Instead of making it a poison just use "bypass": "ignore" on the ionize commands. The poisons will kill them at the end of the turn, but the ionize will kill them immediately

Suggestion: You could use the "cancel" feature to make a command that cancels /ionize, in case you have a dumb teammate wasting your team's /ionize N1.
Not really important, just could be cool.
