Suggest Categories for Hangman Event Games!

Hi all!
As you may have noticed, the #Hangman channel on the server recently gained event games, held every half hour for points on our leaderboard! Games are automated by our Hangman bot Unown, with a selection of categories of hints and subject matters (eg. countries, Pokémon, fruits etc.)

However, we want more! This is your place to suggest categories that a set of event games can be based upon. Keep these things in mind when suggesting though:

• we are looking for event categories, where multiple games can use the same hint, not individual games
• make sure the categories you suggest are not obscure, we like everyone to be able to participate in event games
• a category or subject with a good range of words/terms we can include are really appreciated, for example there are over 100 countries, thus meaning over 100 games in that category
• suggesting a category here does not guarantee that you will see it in the event game database, so do not be disheartened if yours does not get selected!

Currently we have Pokémon, Pokémon moves, fruit, countries and animals?

I'd say Pokémon items make a great category if we don't have that yet.
Elements (periodic table) are commonly used too, that could work.
Food in general also comes along often, although as a category that might be a bit vague (on the other hand, in Trivia it's food/drinks).
Actors could be used, singers, bands, none too obscure, but bands/singers with at least 1 famous song or something like that.

 

Some categories I can think of:
-Roman gods
-Greek gods
-Egyptian gods
-Language (i.e. French, German etc.)

 

I'd suggest Sports, Pokemon Items, Pokemon Ability, Mythology, Plants

 

Artists.
Capitals of countries.
TV Shows.
Video Games - Actual game titles.

 

I have added a list of all categories we currently have to the first post for reference.
In regards to broad suggestions, please try and narrow down your category. For example, when you say video games, any particular genre or way we can narrow this down into a non-obscure list? When you say actors, should this be refined by recent films, those with recent Oscars or awards etc.?

 

Pokemon Items was already added around a week ago. So is part of Pokemon Locations (from Hoenn, Kanto and Johto).

 

Famous Band Names (stuff like the Beatles and Led Zeppelin for example)
Nintendo Video Game Titles (making it more specific)
Comic Book Heroes and Villains (very little outside of DC or Marvel)

 

Well, today we had games about Currency, and it's pretty good b/c we have a lot of currencies.
As well, I'd like to suggest Humanity Heritage as well, because embrace a good variety of options too (as Currency too) :)

EDIT: I really liked the Mythology suggest.

 

Boring Suggestions
School Equipment: e.g. Pencil, Pen, Ruler
School Lessons: e.g. Maths, Literature, English, Animal Science, Biology, etc.

Good Suggestions
Famous Pokémon Animé Characters: e.g. Ash, Brock, Misty, Iris, etc. (You could even include Sabrina from the first few seasons if enough people knew about her :O )

 

For Video Games, make some "sub-categories" according to the console. Something like "SNES Game" or "PC Game" should make it better than simply "Video Game".
Maybe something like "Pokémon Games NPCs", but only for relevant characters like Gym Leaders, important NPCs like Bill or even more iconic characters like Earl. Basically, any named NPC excluding the random trainers.

I'd like to suggest stars, but that would probably be a bit obscure :x

 

Celestial bodies works

 

I also think colours would make an interesting category. It could go from easy ones (blue, green, yellow), to a bit harder (violet, indigo, aquamarine) to even some tough ones (maroon, crimson, mauve).

Wikipedia has a massive list with colours, so it'd be easy to find some colours that would fit nicely, and of course you can leave out some obscure ones (like Air Force Blue (USAF)).

I think an interesting category is Internet Stars. Stars that have been famous via the Internet and YouTube is really available to everyone in the world. Some examples would be: Anthony Padilla, Ray William Johnson, IJustine, Jenna Marbles, Ian Hecox, TheFineBros, and Felix (Enter PewDiePie's Last Name).

 

I see we have countries; cities could be a nice category (or sub-category) as well. With a plethora of cities to choose from, they'd make for quite some interesting games.

Also adding anime characters because anime is quite popular (or that's how I see it on PO).

 

What do we really need?,

BANDS. ART STYLES. ARTISTS. HISTORICAL PEOPLE FROM ALL LANDS (I'm looking at you Gandhi and Che Guevara.), HISTORIC PLACES (world wonders, tourist sights in countries, blah), ANIMALS, CREATURES THAT GO BUMP IN THE NIGHT, MYTH SEEMS LIKE A FAVORITE - MORE MYTHICAL CREATURES AND GODS. GREEK, NORWEGIAN, ISLAMIC, ROMAN EVEN. MOVIES WITH GENRES TO SPECIFY. ELEMENTS ARE DECENT.

 

Come up with another one: Transportation means, from easy like plane, to harder like truck (Yea I ain't giving away the really good ones just yet~)

 

One issue I could see with celestial bodies is they have numbers in them, which may bring a problem for some of them.

Also, I'd personally like to see something such as wars, without focusing on things like that one obscure war between two tribes during the stone age.

 

I dunno but Capital Cities would make for a category too as there is a limited amount of those and stuff. Also I see those being played from time to time.

 

I feel like that list would be very, very broad, which might get out of hand.

On another note, I do like the idea of a gym leader category. Everyone knows them, but there are a couple dozen to choose from.

 

Gym Leaders have now been added as they were relatively simple to do, and accessible as a game category!

Keep suggesting though guys!

 

If you were to add animals, you could break that down into birds, insects, fish etc. as that still gives a good range of games for each one.

 

How about separating Pokemon Items and Key Items?

Also are orange league leaders in the GL category

 

Maybe anime like Naruto and Pokemon? Or main characters from video games?

 

I'd personally be interested in seeing a historical figures category. It may be broad though, so I'm not sure if that should be broken into sub-categories like eras or countries the person ruled/had a major impact on.

Adding popular/well-known books or book characters into the mix. Might be another broad topic that could be broken down into genres or something like that.

Animals split into sub-categories like mammals, birds and so on, but not insects, because they are gross

Books bc we are the smartest; you could also name it "work(s) of literature"

I think Sports team should be good too (like Soccer, Volleyball, Basketball and Amr. Football [maybe just the famous, or in the major league or similar).
Something like TV Series should be good, and maybe some characters from them, not sure about this btw.

 

If we were to do book characters or tv characters or animes or anything, we'd definitely need to have a definition for "obscure"

 

But we can just use sub-categories for that (adding the name of the TV show/book/animes where the character comes from).
Or don't do if It's hard to add or won't improve the game at all.

 

I don't see how? It's all English... (I.e. /start spanish:Language) Just clearing that up I realise what a bad idea this was Dx

 

i was under the impression you meant words from other languages, but languages per se are okay and a good idea

 

I have just added some dinosaurs to the event pool!
I shall be looking over some more suggestions from this thread today to see if I can get some good lists generated!

 

Adding another one to the games department, perhaps Games Consoles? There's enough choice there without being vague.

 

Common household items, perhaps? Good range of answers there.

 

A basic list of animals has been added!
I have not split into categories for now, but kept the animals basic and not split by species or anything too crazily obscure as an animal altogether.

In terms of Historical Figures, we would need to think about what sort of history, as someone famous in one country may not be known in another. Unless I can get some support behind certain sub categories of historical figures (eg. if a lot of you said you were comfy with British Kings and Queens), I would be hesitant to consider for now.

Other than that I shall keep looking back at this list for things. Remember, it helps me if I can Google and find a list I can tailor to Hangman's needs, rather than have to think up the list from scratch.

 

Former World Leaders in general? You'd end up with people like Josef Stalin and Abraham Lincoln in the same category, though, which would be weird...
Speaking of, former Presidents doesn't sound like a terrible idea with fifty+ to pick from.

I like video game consoles.

Also, Trainer Classes.

 

Well, we have Pokemon, so why not add Pokemon Species (legendary, boundary, rendezvous, mysterious, bright) as a category? I'm one of only a few people to start games with a hint like that, but they're quite a few of them and they aren't always obvious (but are by no means too difficult to figure out).
