General Although there are many Fighting types currently residing in NU, Virizion has no difficulty whatsoever separating itself from the pack. For a kick off its Grass typing gives it welcome resistances to Ground, Water and Electric moves while also giving it the ability to smash clean through the likes of Hippowdon, Quagsire and Vaporeon. The USPs don't stop there: it can sweep physically or specially with Swords Dance and Calm Mind, and with a stellar base 108 Speed it outruns most of the unboosted metagame while that awesome 129 base Special Defence and Grass typing let it beat pretty much every bulky Water type in the tier. Virizion has its flaws however. With Grass moves getting poor coverage, it will always be walled by something. It also has rather average attack stats before boosting, and while its Grass typing brings it welcome resistances, it also cures it with common Fire and Ice weaknesses, as well as a dangerous X4 Flying weakness. Swords Dance Virizion @ Life Orb / Lum Berry Trait: Justified Jolly Nature (+Spd -SAtk) EV: 252 Atk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd Swords Dance Close Combat Leaf Blade / Zen Headbutt Zen Headbutt / Stone Edge A simple set: boost with Swords Dance and sweep. Close Combat is your powerful STAB, while Leaf Blade is your reliable STAB. At +2, Leaf Blade OHKOes Hippowdon every time after Spikes. However, if you don't need to hit bulky Water and Ground types, Zen Headbutt can be used in that slot instead to heavily damage to NU's Poison types after a boost. Stone Edge hits the Bug and Flying types that resist Virizion's STABs for super effective damage. EVs simply maximise Speed and power. Life Orb gives a welcome power boost, although a Lum Berry could be used if you're worried about Burns. Calm Mind Virizion @ Life Orb / Leftovers Trait: Justified Timid Nature (+Spd -Atk) EV: 252 SAtk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd Calm Mind Giga Drain Focus Blast Hidden Power Ice Although this set is slower to boost and has to rely on the inaccurate Focus Blast, it's harder to revenge kill than the Swords Dance set and isn't crippled by Burns. Calm Mind is the crux of this set, boosting Virizion's Special Attack to good levels while taking its Special Defence into space. After 1 Calm Mind, Scarf Typhlosion's Eruption won't OHKO. Giga Drain serves as your reliable STAB while Focus Blast serves as your powerful one. Hidden Power Ice badly injures most Flying types and opposing Grass types. Again, EVs maximise Speed and power. As for item, Life Orb is generally preferred, since it gives Virizion a noticeable power increase and Giga Drain means the recoil won't be too much of a problem. However, if you prefer the passive recovery of Leftovers it's viable. Other Options A mixed set with Work Up is possible, but that means splitting EVs and reducing bulk and those are 2 things Virizion would much rather not do. X-Scissor can be used on the Swords Dance set to hit Psychic and Grass types a bit harder, but apart from Exeggutor it doesn't achieve any notable KOs. Virizion can set up dual screens, but generally Xatu is superior in that role due to U-Turn and immunity to Taunt. Energy Ball or Grass Knot could be used on the Calm Mind set, but Giga Drain's healing effect is usually preferred and the extra power is often negligible while Grass Knot is just too unreliable. Substitue can be used on either set to shield Virizion from status and revenge killing, but squeezing it in is very difficult. Leftovers can be used on the Swords Dance set, but the power of a Life Orb and the protection of a Lum Berry are usually more beneficial. Virizion can use a Choice Scarf, but it's already very fast and will be quite weak with no way of boosting. Likewise, it could also run a Choice Band/Specs set, but it prefers having the freedom to switch moves. Checks and Counters Bulky Poison types in general are excellent checks if Virizion lacks Zen Headbutt, able to take most of its other attacks and either badly wound it with their super effective STABs or cripple with status. Draglage, Arbok and Garbador can all survive any move other than Zen Headbutt while OHKOing back with their respective Poison STABs. Weezing can endure a +2 Zen Headbutt and cripple with Will-O-Wisp. Amoongus and defensive Vileplume can survive a +2 Zen Headbutt if Virizion isn't holding a Life Orb and do major damage with Sludge Bomb. Exeggutor beats sets that lack X-Scissor with ease, since it can take a +1 Hidden Power Ice or +2 Close Combat and OHKO back with Psyshock. Whimsicott can force Virizion out with its Prankster Encore, while resisting both of its STABs and whittling it down with Moonblast. Hidden Power Ice will sting though. Gorgeist and Trevenant wall the Swords Dance set and can cripple with Will-O-Wisp, but will lose to the special set. Gurdurr can survive a +2 Life Orb boosted Close Combat and 2HKO back with Drain Punch and Mach Punch, but it has a good chance of being OHKOd after a layer of Spikes damage. 252/0 Uxie can survive a +2 X-Scissor and cripple Virizion with Thunder Wave. Faster Flying types like Swellow can force Virizion out, but most have to be wary of Stone Edge or Hidden Power. If all else fails, Choice Scarf users that can hit Virizion super effectively can usually revenge kill it well.
