    Before doing anything:
Make sure you have the latest version from the Downloads page. If you don't have the latest version, get it. We won't answer your query if you don't have the latest version. For Windows, the latest version is v 2.7.1. For Android, the latest version is 2.7.1. If you are using the webclient, you don't need to worry about it.

How to make a Pokémon team:
On Windows / Mac / Linux:
Click File, then Open Team Builder. You can edit Pokémon by clicking the Pokémon slots on the right of the Trainer Home screen. On the specific Pokémon's screen, you can enter a Pokémon's name in the nickname field, or click the image in the top left to change Pokémon.

You can reorder your team by clicking and dragging them to the slot you want them to be in when on the trainer home screen.

You change the generation by clicking Gen at the top, and then choosing the subgen you want. In most cases, it is Sun/Moon (the newest generation) or Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire you want.

To save the team when done, click the save icon in the bottom right, or click Team and then Save Team.

    On the Webclient:
Click Team Builder. You can edit Pokémon by clicking the "Poke #1" "Poke #2" etc buttons. You can change the Pokémon in each slot by entering the Pokémon's name in the textbox below the Pokémon sprite in the top left.

You can reorder your team using the arrows on the right of your Pokémon on the Team Builder Home screen.

You change the generation by clicking to the right of the "Team tier..." field. In most cases, it is Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire you want. It will display as ORAS once clicked.

To save the team when done, click the save icon next to the "Team name..." field. I think it saves your team as a cookie, so don't delete your cookies if you want to keep your team.

    On Android:
You need to be on the server list. Click the Team Builder button. If you are in a server, press your menu button, and then press "Disconnect" and confirm the disconnection. Then you will be on the server list, and can proceed.

You need to swipe right to reach the Pokémon screen, and from there you can click the various Pokémon slots to change your Pokémon. Once you've clicked on your Pokémon, you need to swipe right to change its IVs, nature and ability. Swipe right again to reach your Pokémon's move list. You can also access the move list by pressing the moves at the top of the screen.

You can change your generation by clicking to the right of the "Team tier..." field on the very first screen of the Team Builder. In most cases, it is Sun/Moon (the newest generation) or Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire you want.

To save the team when done, simply press your back button, and then choose to save your team when the message pops up.

    How to change your tier:
If you don't know what a tier is, read the Guide to Tiers. It is important to know this before proceeding further, or trying to battle.
On Windows / Mac / Linux:
Select Tiers at the top of the window, and then navigate the drop down menu to the tier you wish to enter. For most people, this tier will be SM OU.

If messages come up in the chat immediately after you change tier from the server, they will detail the reasons why you cannot enter that tier, and it will move you into a tier that your team can go into. If you still want to battle in the tier you chose from the list, you will need to make edits to your team to remove the items flagged up by the server.

Alternatively, you can use the /changetier command. This command will either let you swap into the tier you specify, or it will tell you that you can't join that tier. If it tells you that you can't join, it does not specify why, so you will have to investigate that yourself.

    On the Webclient:
You need to change your team's tier in the Team Builder. Start to enter the tier you want to join in the text box that says "Team tier...", and it should come up with multiple options for you as you fill in the box more. Select the tier you wish to join when it appears, and then click the "Update" button.

    On Android:
You need to change your team's tier in the Team Builder. Start to enter the tier you want to join in the text box that says "Team tier...", and it should come up with multiple options for you as you fill in the box more. Select the tier you wish to join when it appears. You can then exit the Team Builder and save your team.

If messages come up in the chat immediately that state the reasons why you cannot enter that tier, it will move you into a tier that your team can go into. If you still want to battle in the tier you chose from the list, you will need to make edits to your team to remove the items flagged up by the server by leaving the server and changing your team in the team builder.

Alternatively, you can use the /changetier command. This command will either let you swap into the tier you specify, or it will tell you that you can't join that tier. If it tells you that you can't join, it does not specify why, so you will have to investigate that yourself.

    How to battle another user:
On Windows / Mac / Linux:
There's a Find Battle button located in the bottom left corner of the client. Click that button. In the little pop-up that appears, select your team and tier, and then click Find Battle. This will find you a battle vs another user who has done the same thing. These battles will usually be rated, and count towards the ladder for the tier you are searching for.

To challenge specific users, you can double click on a user's name to bring up the challenge window. You can also right click on a user's name (for computers with that ability) and select "Challenge" to bring up the challenge window. You can also click the "Challenge" button in a Private Message window to bring up the challenge window.

Once the challenge window has appeared, you can select the clauses you wish to use for the battle as you wish, select the loaded team you wish to use, and even change the battle mode between Singles, Doubles and Triples. Once you've made your decision, press the Challenge button on the challenge window.

Note that any battles in a server Tournament will not take place unless the correct clauses are added when you challenge a user, and a user's specific settings may prevent a challenge from being sent. If a user's Pokeball is greyed out, they are not accepting challenges.

How to use your own team in a standard battle:
    On all clients:
    1. Make sure you have your own team created and loaded in the team builder. Look above for how to do this.

    2. Make sure you are not in any tiers with the words "Battle Factory", "Challenge Cup" or "CC" in their title. If you are not aiming to find a battle with an inverted type-matchup (e.g. Fire is super-effective on Water), make sure you are not in the tier with the word "Inverted" in its title. If you are not aiming to find a battle where you can use any combination of Pokémon, ability and moves (e.g. Magikarp can learn Oblivion Wing), make sure you are not in a tier with the word "Hackmons" in its title.

    3. Make sure that the tier you are in matches the generation you chose to use in the Team Builder. RBY tiers use the "Yellow" subgen; GSC tiers use the "Crystal" subgen; Adv tiers use the "XD" subgen; HGSS tiers use the "Heart Gold/Soul Silver" subgen; BW2 tiers use the "Black/White 2" subgen; ORAS tiers use the "Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire" subgen; and SM tiers use the "Sun/Moon" subgen.

    4. Ensure that your team does not use invalid Pokémon, items, abilities or moves. Check the tier listing for that information. Note that we do not use the same tiers as Smogon. If your Pokémon has no moves, the server does not count your Pokémon for your team.

    5. Make sure you don't have "Challenge Cup" checked in the challenge window.

    6. If you still can't use your own team after following all of these steps, ask a member of authority for help. They will be able to point out what you missed.

How to Mega Evolve a Pokémon:
Please note: Mega Rayquaza is banned from SM Ubers and ORAS Ubers and cannot be Mega Evolved in those tiers.
On Windows / Mac / Linux:
In the team builder, make sure the Pokémon that you wish to Mega Evolve is holding the Mega Stone that it requires. For example, Gardevoir needs to hold a Gardevoirite to Mega Evolve in battle. If you wish to Mega Evolve a Rayquaza, it must have the move Dragon Ascent in its moveset.

Once in battle, any Pokémon that is holding the correct Mega Stone (or in Rayquaza's case, has Dragon Ascent in its moveset) will have a new "Mega evolution" button appear below the moves of the Pokémon. If you click that button and select a move as normal, it will Mega Evolve at the start of the turn, before any moves are used.

If you decide to not use Mega Evolution after clicking the "Mega evolution" button, simply reclick the "Mega evolution" button and your Pokémon will not Mega Evolve.

In SM, turn order is decided after Mega Evolution takes place, so a Pokémon such as Mega Metagross would start with the mega forme's Speed on the turn that it Mega Evolves. In ORAS, turn order is decided before the Mega Evolution takes place, so you will not be able to outspeed a Pokémon due to an improved Base Speed until the turn after you have Mega Evolved.

Note that you can only Mega Evolve one Pokémon per battle. Once you have used Mega Evolution, the "Mega evolution" button will no longer appear during that battle.

    On the Webclient:
In the team builder, make sure the Pokémon that you wish to Mega Evolve is holding the Mega Stone that it requires. For example, Gardevoir needs to hold a Gardevoirite to Mega Evolve in battle. If you wish to Mega Evolve a Rayquaza, it must have the move Dragon Ascent in its moveset.

Once in battle, any Pokémon that is holding the correct Mega Stone (or in Rayquaza's case, has Dragon Ascent in its moveset) will have the "Mega" button be clickable just above the moves of the Pokémon. If you click that button and select a move as normal, it will Mega Evolve at the start of the turn, before any moves are used.

If you decide to not use Mega Evolution after clicking the "Mega" button, simply reclick the "Mega" button and your Pokémon will not Mega Evolve.

In SM, turn order is decided after Mega Evolution takes place, so a Pokémon such as Mega Metagross would start with the mega forme's Speed on the turn that it Mega Evolves. Note that you can only Mega Evolve one Pokémon per battle. Once you have used Mega Evolution, the "Mega" button will no longer be able to be clicked during that battle.

It is also worth noting that if you try to Mega Evolve Rayquaza in a tier where Mega Rayquaza is banned, such as SM Ubers or ORAS Ubers, the webclient will automatically prevent you from clicking the Mega button.

    On Android:
In the team builder, make sure the Pokémon that you wish to Mega Evolve is holding the Mega Stone that it requires. For example, Gardevoir needs to hold a Gardevoirite to Mega Evolve in battle. If you wish to Mega Evolve a Rayquaza, it must have the move Dragon Ascent in its moveset.

Once in battle, you must have the Pokémon that is holding the correct Mega Stone (or in Rayquaza's case, has Dragon Ascent in its moveset) active in battle. If so, a new option will appear if you press the menu button called "Megaevolve". If you check that box and select a move as normal, it will Mega Evolve at the start of the turn, before any moves are used.

If you decide to not use Mega Evolution after checking the "Megaevolve" box, simply uncheck the "Megaevolve" box and your Pokémon will not Mega Evolve.

Once you have used Mega Evolution, the "Megaevolve" option will no longer appear during that battle.

    How to use Z-Moves:
    On Windows:
In the team builder, choose the Pokémon you wish to use a Z-Move. Next, choose a move or moves that you wish to use as the base for your Z-Move. You then need to make that Pokémon hold the Z-Crystal of that specific move's type. For example, in order to be able to use the Fire Blast Z-Move, your Pokémon needs to have the move Fire Blast in its moveset, and it must hold the Firium Z item, as Fire Blast is a Fire-type move.

Once in battle, any Pokémon that is holding the correct Z-Crystal for a move in its moveset will have a new "Z-Move" button appear below the moves of the Pokémon. If you click that button, the moves that are compatible with that Z-Crystal will now be replaced with their Z-Move variants, and all incompatible moves will be greyed out. For example, a Pokémon holding Firium Z with Fire Blast and Will-O-Wisp will have Fire Blast turn into Inferno Overdrive, and Will-O-Wisp turn into Z-Will-O-Wisp. Choose the appropriate Z-Move, and you will use it in battle.

If you decide to not use a Z-Move after clicking the "Z-Move" button, simply reclick the "Z-Move" button and your moveset will return to normal.

Note that you can only use one Z-Move per battle on your entire team. Once you have used a Z-Move, the "Z-Move" button will no longer appear in that battle.

    On Android:
In the team builder, choose the Pokémon you wish to use a Z-Move. Next, choose a move or moves that you wish to use as the base for your Z-Move. You then need to make that Pokémon hold the Z-Crystal of that specific move's type. For example, in order to be able to use the Fire Blast Z-Move, your Pokémon needs to have the move Fire Blast in its moveset, and it must hold the Firium Z item, as Fire Blast is a Fire-type move.

Once in battle, you must have the Pokémon that is holding the correct Z-Crystal for a move in its moveset active in battle. If so, a new option will appear if you press the menu button called "Z-Move", as well as a "Z" button in the top right of the battle screen. If you click that button or check the "Z-Move" box, the moves that are compatible with that Z-Crystal will now be replaced with their Z-Move variants, and all incompatible moves will be greyed out. For example, a Pokémon holding Firium Z with Fire Blast and Will-O-Wisp will have Fire Blast turn into Inferno Overdrive and Will-O-Wisp turn into Z-Will-o-Wisp. Choose the appropriate Z-Move, and you will use it in battle.

If you decide to not use a Z-Move after clicking the "Z" button or checking the "Z-Move" box, simply open the menu and uncheck the "Z-Move" box and your moveset will return to normal.

Note that you can only use one Z-Move per battle on your entire team. Once you have used a Z-Move, the "Z-Move" button will no longer appear in that battle.

    On Webclient:
In the team builder, choose the Pokémon you wish to use a Z-Move. Next, choose a move or moves that you wish to use as the base for your Z-Move. Once in battle, any Pokémon that is holding the correct Z-Crystal for a move in its moveset will have a new "Z-Move" button appear above the moves of the Pokémon. If you click that button, the moves that are compatible with that Z-Crystal will be usable, and all incompatible moves will be greyed out. For example, a Pokémon holding Firium Z with Fire Blast and Will-O-Wisp will be able to use Inferno Overdrive and Z-Will-O-Wisp. Choose the appropriate Z-Move, and you will use it in battle.

Currently, once you click the Z-Move button, you will be forced to select a Z-Move because a way to cancel has not yet been implemented.

Note that you can only use one Z-Move per battle on your entire team. Once you have used a Z-Move, the "Z-Move" button will no longer appear in that battle.

How to privately message (PM) other users:
    On Windows/Linux:
Right click on the name of the user you want to PM from the userlist, and then left click "Send Message" to bring up the PM window. Once you are in the PM window, any messages sent in that PM window will only be sent to the user in question at the top of the tab in the PM window.

    On Mac:
Press Control and click on the name of the user you want to PM from the userlist, and then left click "Send Message" to bring up the PM window. Once you are in the PM window, any messages sent in that PM window will only be sent to the user in question at the top of the tab in the PM window.

    On the Webclient
Right click on the name of the user you want to PM from the userlist, and then left click "Private Message" to bring up a PM tab. You can also left click a user's name to bring up the challenge window, and then press "Private Message" at the bottom of that challenge window to bring up a PM tab.

The PM tabs appear on the left side of the webclient, in the same location as all channels you enter, and you can click on that tab at any time to return to the PM conversation. When you are in a PM tab, any messages sent in that PM tab will only be sent to the user in question.

    On Android
Swipe left to bring up the user list. From there, long press on the name of the user you want to PM from the userlist, and then press "Private Message" to bring up the PM screen.

Once you are in the PM screen, you can swipe left or right to swap between any users you are in a PM conversation with. Any messages sent in that PM screen will only be sent to the user in question that is underlined at the top of the PM screen.

    How to register/unregister a name:
Other people can access your account by signing on using your name. Registering your name behind a password prevents this from happening.

    On Windows/Mac/Linux
    To register:
There's a "register" button on the bottom of the screen, directly to the right of the "Find Battle" button. Once you have logged onto the server, click the register button to bring up the password screen. Once here, you need to enter your desired password in both fields. If the passwords do not match, the server will reject it.

This password will be required to access your name from that point on, and will need to be entered any time anyone with that name tries to log on to the server. You can check the "Save the user password" button if you do not want to enter your password every time, but it is recommended that you do not do this if you are on a shared computer.

    To unregister:
Log onto the server with the name that you wish to unregister. After this, type the "/resetpass" command in the main chat window. This will clear the password on your name, allowing you to change the password (by registering it again), or to give the name to another user.

Please note that you cannot unregister a name that you cannot access, and that all names that are not banned will have their passwords automatically reset by the server if they do not log onto the server for 6 months.

    On the Webclient:
    To register:
Once you have logged onto the server, access the options menu by pressing the cog button in the top right corner of the screen. On the menu that appears, press the "Register" option at the bottom of that menu to bring up the password screen. Once here, enter your desired password in the field that pops up.

This password will be required to access your name from that point on, and will need to be entered any time anyone with that name tries to log on to the server. Currently, the Webclient does not automatically remember your password, so you will need to make sure you remember your password if you are using the Webclient.

    On Android:
    To register:
Once you've logged onto the server, press your menu button to bring up the options menu. In the menu, press the "Register your name" option to bring up the password screen. Once here, enter your desired password in the field that pops up.

This password will be required to access your name from that point on, and will need to be entered any time anyone with that name tries to log on to the server. Your Android device should remember the password and automatically enter it whenever you try to log on using that device, so try not to let others use your device.

Answers to questions that don't need long answers:
Why is Pokémon Online not on the Google Play store?
We previously had the PO Android client on the Google Play store, but it was taken down by Google following a copyright claim. As such, we cannot place the PO Android client on the Google Play store anymore. The PO Android client is still available from our Downloads page.
    Is there an iOS client?
No. We simply do not have a developer who knows how to make an iOS client.

If you're a developer that wishes to create an iOS client, you are more than welcome to do so, as we are an open source project. It is recommended that you contact the development team in the Development General subforum.
What do the different Pokéballs mean?
Assuming you're using one of the default themes, Poké Ball = User; Great Ball = Moderator; Ultra Ball = Administrator; Master Ball = Owner. In short, anyone that doesn't have a Poké Ball is a member of the server authority. If a ball is greyed out, they're marked as idle and do not accept challenges. If a Poké Ball is blue, or if a Great, Ultra or Master Ball is green, then that person is battling.
Why do I keep not being able to do anything in battle on the Windows client?
Cries apparently take up too much memory on your computer. Disable Pokémon cries by choosing Battle Options -> Sound configuration and then making sure the box next to "Play pokemon cries" hasn't got a checkmark in it. Make sure you save the sound settings by pressing the button at the bottom of that window to save this setting.

If that doesn't fix it, use the Old Battle Window by choosing Battle Options -> Old Battle Window and ensuring a checkmark is next to Old Battle Window.

This bug may have been fixed as of v2.7.1.
Can I do Doubles or Triples battles on the Webclient?
Currently, the Webclient is unable to do Doubles or Triples battles. We recommend downloading the Windows, Mac or Linux client currently, as the webclient is still currently in development.
Why can't I challenge my opponent in a server tournament?
Either you are using the Android client, or your opponent is. The best solution to this is to log off the server, and then log back on. If you are moved out of the correct tier for the tournament and you were using an autoteam from the server, type "/getteam" in the Tournaments channel to get a new automatically generated team.

If this does not work, ask your opponent to do the same.

If it continues to not work after this, please contact a MegaUser or Moderator. They can be found by typing "/mus" or "/auth" in the server chat respectively.
What do I do if I forget my password?
Contact a Server Owner, who will be able to check if you actually owned the name. If they can confirm this, they will be able to reset the password on the name, allowing you to re-register it.

If the Server Owners cannot confirm that you owned the name, or you don't overly care that much, just use a different name, and get better at remembering your passwords. The name's password will automatically reset in 6 months, so try again then.
    Can I have auth?
No. Asking for authority on the server violates the server rules, and asking for authority on the forums may result in an infraction. We don't give away auth to people that simply ask for it. It is something that needs to be earned.

We have a List of things you can do to contribute to Pokémon Online, and actively contributing to PO is the way to earn authority, in general. Being active on the forums, actively contributing to forum discussions and reporting posts that break the rules may help you to become a forum moderator. Additionally, the leaders of various projects automatically get forum authority over their respective subforum, so becoming an active contributor will reward you in that manner.

To be considered as a candidate for server authority, you should be helping others, following the rules and maintaining a high level of activity on the server. Do not complain if you feel like you deserve authority, as this will likely disqualify you from any discussions on the matter. Just continue to help people out, and you may eventually be noticed.
I'm trying to run a server, but users cannot connect. What do I do?
In order to be able to have users of all non-webclient clients connect to your server, you need to ensure that your server is set to Public, and that you are allowing connections via port 5080, by default.

In order to be able to have Webclient users connect to your server, you need to ensure that you are allowing connections via port 10508, and that you are running the "relaystation.exe" file found in your Pokémon Online folder.

In order to connect yourself, you need to ensure you connect via your local IP, which in most cases will be 127.0.0.1:5080.

For further help on how to get a PO Server running, check out our Guide on Running a Server over on Github, or ask for help in the Help subforum.
I found a bug! What should I do?
Head on over to the Bugs and Fixes forum, which can be found here: http://pokemon-online.eu/forums/9/

Make sure you check to see if the bug has already been reported recently. If it has, and it has not yet been fully confirmed or fixed, post in the appropriate topic. If it hasn't, make a new topic for it, providing as much detail as you can.
I need some help, and this FAQ didn't answer my question! What should I do?
Head on over to the Help subforum, which can be found here: http://pokemon-online.eu/forums/16/

Make sure you check to see if any threads with a [Resolved] tag hold an answer to your problem. If that doesn't help, check out the current Index for Guides to PO to see if we have a guide for your problem. That Index of guides can be found here: http://pokemon-online.eu/threads/30094/

If none of that helps, make a new topic in the Help subforum, and we'll be happy to try and help you out!
Are you the real Professor Oak?
I am a living, breathing person who uses the alias of Professor Oak. I am not the Professor Oak from the games, anime or manga.
Will you give us a starter Pokémon?
    No.
    Do you want to battle?
    No.

If anyone believes any questions need adding to this, or wants to ask a question that they can't find on this FAQ, feel free to post.

    "Can I have auth?"

Legitimate chance to briefly explain how authority is given out, and didn't see it anywhere on here.

I forgot to include it, primarily because the only person to ask for authority of any kind lately has been xdevo.

I've now added it to the OP. Thanks pnerd.

I have done what the above post requests.

I've also added questions regarding our lack of iOS client and why PO isn't on the Google Play store.

Following a recent Help question, I finally gave in and added a small section on running a server. It lists the ports that need to be opened to be able to accept connections, and mentions that relaystation.exe needs to be run to accept webclient connections.

It also links to the Running a PO Server guide over on Github, in order to avoid going on for too long.

If Webclient: I think it already has some pre-saved soundtracks that should be able to play if Simple Battle Audio is on and if you click on "Play with music" by the start of the battle.

If Android: Not possible for now.

If Windows: Battle Options > Sound configuration > The default music folder in your PO folder is called "Music" (if I'm not wrong) but you can define any other folder for the battle window to pick the .mp3 files to play, once a match starts, it chooses a track randomly so to change to any specific track you want you'd have to be turning it on and off constantly in the battle window.
