Discuss the possibility of Dugtrio being banned from the ORAS UU tier.

Use this thread to discuss Dugtrio's impact on the metagame. Talk about the different sets it is capable of using, and potential checks/counters. State your opinion on wether Dugtrio should be banned (or not) from the metagame. Having no firm stance on the matter is fine too.

All opinions are valid and discussion among players is not only allowed but encouraged, provided your opinion has solid reasoning and displays having playing with or against Dugtrio in the tier. Do not simply state "it's broken" or "it's not broken".

Users that are unsure about suspect posting are encouraged to check this guide out.

duggy is a great check to specific offensive mons (the popular fires, coba) and a good way to remove specific walls (steels and bliss mostly). the first part is nice, as tini/entei/chandy are very prevalent in the tier, and in tini's case pretty overpowered, so it's nice to have an additional way to remove it/them beyond mega aero pursuits.

besides that, it does its job rather well but obviously needs a sacrifice (or you need to be a predictionlord) to bring it in safely, and after it gets its kill it can be taken advantage of by some of the most threatening mons in the tier. it's definitely something to be mindful of when teambuilding but it is in no way a defining metagame factor or broken or whatever you wanna call it. keep please and thanks

Saying that dugtrio is a "check" to anything is extremely disingenuous to what the word "check" means. Dugtrio, sans Focus Sash shenanigans, cannot switch into essentially anything in UU. What Dugtrio does is either guaranteed revenge killing (or predicted switch, U-turn / Volt Switch, killing) or weakening a wall / threatening to allow / prevent a sweep. Even then, it guaranteeing a kill after (non-sub) a sac / sash shenanigans vs some powerful fire-types is irrelevant to its potential brokenness

What makes Dugtrio so cancerous is that it + specific Pokemon have few ways to actually counter-play. Specific Duggy builds can just remove all / almost all of the checks of Suicune, certain Dragons, Slurpuff, etc. Since all of those Pokemon are very threatening, and waiting to bring a check into play can simply be an auto-loss, Dugtrio becomes a huge hindrance to the normal counter-play one would have against important threats. Especially in a metagame where numerous important pokemon only have 2 or 3 checks that fit on a given archtype (Whims being one of the few checks for Cune on Offense, Steels being one of the few ways to check mons like Salamence, etc), trapping becomes an absurdly powerful tool with very few ways of effectively counter-playing against it. Even if Dugtrio can't guarantee a OHKO, it's capable of weakening many checks to the point where they can't perform their intended function without any real counter-play.

Yeah I'm guessing this kinda died didn't it. Surprise surprise.

Dugtrio, while not being the most obvious threat in the tier, is a Pokemon against which there is no counterplay; if it traps something, nothing's saving it. This means that the player has no possible "good" play, no matter how skilled. This is not something that is desirable in a competitive environment. Dugtrio is by no means the only trapper out there, but it's definitely the one that's the most detrimental to the metagame, and as such it will be banned from ORAS UU.
