    Introduction
Lunala, one of the two cover legendaries of Generation 7, has already made an impact on the SM Ubers scene. It is proven to be a good wallbreaker due to its high base 137 Special Attack, while its extremely wide movepool lets it have amazing coverage. Its dual typing - Ghost & Psychic - makes it vulnerable to one of the most popular types of Sun & Moon, which is Dark. Dark-types have seen a rise in this generation because of their immunity to Prankster and the absence of Mega Diancie, until now. Lunala is also slower than Yveltal, which is another notable problem.

On the bright side, its ability Shadow Shield was introduced in this generation, and it is really helpful, since it reduces the damage Lunala takes by half if it is at full HP, enhancing Lunala's bulk. All in all, Lunala is an interesting Pokémon to use with many different options, so let's move on to the set analyses!
    Sets

    Choice Scarf

    Lunala @ Choice Scarf
    Ability: Shadow Shield
    EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
    Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
    IVs: 0 Atk
    - Moongeist Beam
    - Psyshock
    - Focus Blast
    - Ice Beam / Moonblast
Moongeist Beam is the primary Ghost STAB move of Lunala with 100 BP, and it can deal a nice amount of damage to the plethora of Pokémon used in Ubers. The other STAB move of Lunala, Psyshock, is used to get better damage against special walls, since the damage is based on the target's Defense and not Special Defense. Focus Blast offers great coverage, dealing super effective damage to Dark-type Pokémon that wall Lunala, while helping to check Arceus-Normal. Ice Beam is used for Zygarde, Mega Salamence, or Rayquaza and helps Lunala prevent them from setting up on it while also hitting Yveltal hard. Moonblast can be used as a safer way to deal damage to Dark-type Pokémon, but the combination of Focus Blast and Ice Beam is preferred.

Regarding the EVs, 252 on both Special Attack and Speed is pretty self explanatory for a Choice Scarf set on a specially attacking Pokémon. A Modest nature is preferred to maximize the amount of damage, while a neutral Speed nature lets Lunala hit 439 Speed which is enough to outspeed Deoxys-Attack. A Timid nature could be used to outspeed Pheromosa as well, but the latter cannot really cause any problems to Lunala.

    Choice Specs

    Lunala @ Choice Specs
    Ability: Shadow Shield
    EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
    Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
    IVs: 0 Atk
    - Moongeist Beam
    - Psyshock
    - Focus Blast
    - Ice Beam / Thunder
The move choices are similar to the Choice Scarf set. Moongeist Beam & Psyshock are the main STAB moves for the same reasons explained above. Focus Blast hits Arceus-Dark (2HKO) & Tyranitar (2HKO if Chople Berry is used) even harder. Ice Beam KOes even the bulkiest version of Zygarde and has a 25% chance to OHKO Yveltal. Choice Specs Lunala can also opt for Thunder so it can deal great damage to the likes of Ho-Oh (2HKO), Primal Kyogre (2HKO), and Yveltal (OHKO).

The EVs distribution is pretty simple. 252 EVs on both Special Attack and Speed with a Timid nature gives Lunala 322 Speed and the chance to outspeed Arceus Support Formes, non-max Speed Yveltal, and Rayquaza, while it gets to tie with opposing max Speed Lunala and Solgaleo. A Modest nature can be used to maximize Lunala's Special Attack, but it loses the ability to outspeed all of the above, which is more important.

    Z-Hypnosis Offensive

    Lunala @ Psychium Z
    Ability: Shadow Shield
    EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
    Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
    IVs: 0 Atk
    - Hypnosis
    - Calm Mind
    - Moongeist Beam
    - Focus Blast
When the move Hypnosis is used along with Psychium Z, the result is wonderful. Z-Hypnosis puts the opposing Pokémon to sleep while raising Lunala's Speed by 1 stage. That way Lunala can put its check to sleep, providing an opportunity to set up with Calm Mind. Once set up, you have an amazing special sweeper which can blast through whole teams. The remaining two moves were easy to select: Moongeist Beam, Lunala's primary move for Ghost STAB, and Focus Blast for the best available coverage against Normal- and Dark-types.

    Other Options
Ghostium Z: This set can be used to help Lunala achieve a potential sweep with Calm Mind and three attacks, which usually are Moongeist Beam (which can be boosted with the Z-Crystal for once), Focus Blast and Ice Beam / Moonblast / Roost. The logic of this set is similar to the Z-Hypnosis one, but the aforementioned is better because sleep can give Lunala a free round to set up.

Defensive Set: A defensive set with Will-O-Wisp, Roost, Moongeist Beam, and Calm Mind can be used, so Lunala can abuse its ability Shadow Shield. The problem with that set is that Lunala doesn't have enough natural bulk to help it pull off that role.

    Checks and Counters
Dark Types: Arceus-Dark and Yveltal are the primary checks of Lunala, since they can OHKO it with their Dark STAB moves. Arceus-Dark, though, cannot switch in safely because Focus Blast Choice Scarf Lunala gets a 2HKO, and the same thing happens with the Hypnosis set if Lunala gets the +1 Speed, taking advantage of the sleep turns.

Pursuit Users: Alolan Muk and Tyranitar can Pursuit trap Lunala and deal huge amounts of damage. Alolan Muk can take any kind of hit from Lunala and just use Pursuit or Knock Off, with the latter being able to OHKO Lunala after Stealth Rock damage. As mentioned above for Arceus-Dark, Tyranitar can not switch in safely if Lunala carries Focus Blast.

Mega Gengar: Lunala can deal with Mega Gengar if either its Shadow Shield is not broken or has a Choice Scarf. In every other case, Mega Gengar can OHKO Lunala with Shadow Ball.

Arceus-Ghost: Choice Scarf or +1 Speed Lunala can deal with Arceus-Ghost. If neither of those apply, Arceus-Ghost can OHKO Lunala with Shadow Force, even if Shadow Shield is still in effect.

Arceus-Normal: It is immune to Moongeist Beam, while it can tank a Focus Blast and deal massive damage back with Shadow Claw / Shadow Force.

Support Arceus Formes: They can Toxic stall Lunala. The Hypnosis set can deal with them while the Choice Specs set can achieve a 2HKO with Moongeist Beam if a slower support forme Arceus switches into it.

A few suggestions here and there.

I feel like the Choice sets can be compressed into one set with the natures and Items slashed down. You can then explain the difference in sets in separate paragraphs.

I know the Z-Hyp is a great set, but I'll give the Standard CM set (CM Roost / 2 Moves or CM+3 moves) more priority over it and would put Z-Hyp in OO or as an extra option below CM.. That's just me saying! :v

I strongly disagree with merging the two choiced sets, since they are completely different and they serve different purposes so i would like to get in detail and analyse both in depth.

Regarding the cm set, Z-Hypnosis outclasses it by far since it gains strong momentum and one can see it by the usage of this set over the simple cm set in this spl.

Both of the above can be supported by the official Smogon Analysis as well. If more people support your opinion though, with valid backup, i am open to change it.

Just put in my 2 cents as a QC. I wouldn't ruin a TL's work.

I am mildly broken between what should go in this article tbh. Are we highlighting standard sets or are we otherwise "spotlighting" popularized sets like Z-Hyp? That could be a CSTU but ok.

Z-Hypnosis is considered a standard set, over the cm set you suggested. The metagame is developing! :)

For the choice sets, is Focus Blast considered to be the primary move? If not, the moves should be reordered by importance.

It is because Focus Blast is the answer to the Dark Type Lunala checks such as Tyranitar, Darkceus etc

IMO you still probably wanna list the STAB move(s) first though, because they tend to be the selling point of the Pokemon. Just about everything gets Focus Blast in Ubers, but Lunala's signature Moongeist Beam really helps it stick out.

But yeah, that's just nitpicking really. As long as it all makes sense, there's no huge importance in move placement.

Nah, I'd put that STABs first and the coverage next tbh.

Arceus-N: Also immune to Moongeist Beam.

Mention of Pursuit and / or Knock Off Deoxys maybe.

Also, if you are using justified alignment, change to left and center for sets.

No mention of Ghostium Z in OO though. CM uses that unless it runs Lum, Lefties or Psychium-Z.

Is there supposed to be something after "Hypnosis set can deal with them if" or does the set deal with all of them? I assumed the "if" was just randomly there and so took it out for the GP check but want to make sure.

GP 1/2 pending a response to the above.

    Introduction
Lunala, one of the two cover legendaries of gGeneration 7, has already made an impact on the SM Ubers scene.

    EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpAtk / 252 Sped

A Modest nature is preferred to maximize the amount of damage, while a neutral Speed nature lets Lunala hit 439 Speed, which is enough to outspeed Deoxys-Attack. A Timid nature could be used to outspeed Pheromosa as well, but the latter cannot really cause any problems to Lunala.

    Choice Specs

    Lunala @ Choice Specs
    Ability: Shadow Shield
    EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpAtk / 252 Sped
    Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
    IVs: 0 Atk
    - Moongeist Beam
    - Psyshock
    - Focus Blast
    - Ice Beam / Thunder
The move choices are similar to the Choice Scarf set. Moongeist Beam & Psyshock are the main STAB moves, for the same reasons explained above.

252 EVs on both Special Attack and Speed, whileith a Timid nature gives Lunala 322 Speed and the chance to outspeed Arceus Support Formes, non-max Speed Yveltal, and Rayquaza, while it gets to tie with opposing max Speed Lunala and Solgaleo. A Modest nature can be used to maximize Lunala's Special Attack, but it loses the ability to outspeed all of the above, which is more important.

    Z-Hypnosis Offensive

    Lunala @ Psychium Z
    Ability: Shadow Shield
    EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpAtk / 252 Sped
    Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Spd)
    IVs: 0 Atk
    - Hypnosis
    - Calm Mind
    - Moongeist Beam
    - Focus Blast
When the move Hypnosis is used along with Psychium Z, the result is wonderful. Z-Hypnosis puts the opposing Pokémon to sleep while raising Lunala's Speed by 1 stage. That way Lunala can put its check to sleep, provinding an opportunity to set up with Calm Mind.

Pursuit Users: Alolan Muk and Tyranitar can pPursuit trap Lunala and deal huge amounts of damage.

Mega Gengar: Lunala can deal with Mega Gengar if either its Shadow Shield is not broken or it ishas a Choice Scarfed.

The hHypnosis set can deal with them while the Choice Specs set can achieve a 2HKO with Moongeist Beam if a slower support forme Arceus switches into it.

Actually, I managed to fuck up the draft somehow so that it didn't have the changes in it apart from the end stuff. I'll fix it and the OP though. Fixed.

Approving with a tentative release date of Sunday, March 19th. Let me know if this date doesn't work for you.
